FICIX - PLANNED WORK ANNOUNCEMENT 0401 Planned work ID: 0401 Release date: 10-Dec-2004 Site: FICIX1-GE Type of maintenance: Software upgrade Impact to services: All services down Schedule Start: 21-Dec-2004 06:15 EET End: 21-Dec-2004 07:15 EET Service Provider: Nordic Lan&Wan, Emergency contact info: Nordic Lan&Wan / Jussi Sjöström: +358-50-544 6302 General enquiries: contact@ficix.fi SUMMARY: IXP switch software upgrade to support 10GE interfaces. Switch will be rebooted and all services are down for max 60 minutes. FICIX2-GE will be in full operation during the maintenance and members are encouraged to move traffic as much as possible to FICIX2-GE before maintenance starts. Members should notify internal and external operational units about this planned work, most important being NOC's and Helpdesks/Customer Services. DETAILS: Current IXP switch is running software which doesn't support 10GE interfaces. An upgrade is required to supply 10GE ports to members. There are pending orders for 10GE connectivity. Software upgrade require hardware reboot's. Tests indicate that the process takes at minimum 20 minutes, and all services should revive withing 30 minute timeframe. If problems arise and several reboot's are required, the maintenance window may last full 60 minutes. All ports are forced down during the maintenance to avoid flapping. RISK ANALYSIS: Unpredicted and unexpected results may arise. Worst case scenario for IXP switch is, that the upgrade is not succesfull and current software will be restored. This would delay the 10GE service introduction. FICIX2-GE will be in full operation during the maintenance. Please notice that if routers connected to FICIX1-GE do not recognize port down situation the time for rerouting may be significant (BGP default dead timer is 90 seconds). To avoid significant routing black-holes connected members are encouraged to move traffic as much as possible to FICIX2-GE before maintenance starts. Members are also encouraged to make sure that networks connected FICIX2-GE are capable to handle the required traffic flows during the maintenance, as well as to make sure that backbones do survive the abnormal traffic patterns. Members should notify internal and external operational units about this planned work, most important being NOC's and Helpdesks/Customer Services. --- EOF
